Bourbon Whiskey
Bourbon is America's native spirit, legally defined and protected by U.S. law. Crafted primarily from corn and aged in new charred oak barrels, bourbon is known for its sweet, rich flavors of vanilla, caramel, and oak. From Kentucky straight bourbon to small batch and single barrel expressions, bourbon offers incredible diversity and value.

The Complete Guide to Bourbon Whiskey
Bourbon is widely regarded as one of the best whiskey styles in the world, particularly for those who appreciate sweet, rich flavors. Understanding what is whiskey made of is essential to appreciating bourbon: at least 51% corn, plus rye or wheat, and malted barley. The difference between bourbon and whiskey is significant β all bourbon is whiskey, but not all whiskey is bourbon. Bourbon's legal requirements (new charred oak barrels, no additives) set it apart from other whiskey styles like Scotch or Irish whiskey.
The Bourbon Production Process
Bourbon production follows a specific process that defines its character:
- Mash Bill - The recipe of grains. At least 51% corn, with the remainder being rye or wheat, and malted barley. High-rye bourbons are spicier; wheated bourbons are softer and sweeter.
- Distillation - Bourbon is distilled to no more than 160 proof, preserving grain character.
- Barrel Entry Proof - Bourbon enters the barrel at no more than 125 proof.
- New Charred Oak Barrels - Each barrel is used only once, then sold to Scotch or other whiskey producers.
- Aging - No minimum age requirement for "straight" bourbon (2 years). Longer aging produces deeper, more complex flavors.
- Bottling - Bourbon is bottled at 80 proof minimum. No additives (color, flavor) are permitted.
Kentucky Straight Bourbon
While bourbon can be made anywhere in the United States, 95% of bourbon is produced in Kentucky. "Kentucky straight bourbon" must meet additional requirements: distilled and aged in Kentucky for at least two years. The state's unique climate (hot summers, cold winters) causes the whiskey to expand into and contract out of the barrel wood, accelerating flavor development.

How to Drink Bourbon
Bourbon is incredibly versatile and can be enjoyed in many ways:
- Neat - Served at room temperature in a Glencairn or rocks glass. The best way to appreciate complexity.
- With a few drops of water - Opens up the aromas and flavors.
- On the rocks - Chills and dilutes slightly, making it more approachable.
- Whisky sour - A classic cocktail using bourbon, lemon, simple syrup, and egg white.
- Best whiskey for old fashioned - Bourbon is the traditional choice. Muddle sugar with bitters, add bourbon, ice, and orange twist.
- Whiskey & Ginger - Bourbon and ginger ale with lime.
- Manhattan - Bourbon, sweet vermouth, and bitters.
Bourbon Age Statements and Rarity
Unlike Scotch, bourbon does not require an age statement. However, when an age statement appears, it indicates the youngest whiskey in the bottle:
- No Age Statement (NAS) - Most bourbons are 4-8 years old. Not necessarily lower quality.
- 4-6 Years - Standard for many entry-level bourbons (Jim Beam White, Maker's Mark).
- 7-10 Years - Premium bourbons with deeper complexity (Knob Creek 9, Eagle Rare 10).
- 12-15 Years - Rare and highly sought after (Weller 12, Van Winkle 12).
- 15-20 Years - Extremely rare and expensive (Pappy 15, 20). Often over-oaked if not carefully selected.
- 20+ Years - Ultra-premium, highly allocated, extremely expensive whiskey. Pappy 23, Eagle Rare 25.
Investing in Bourbon
Bourbon has become a significant alternative investment asset class. Key factors driving value:
- Limited production - Pappy Van Winkle and Buffalo Trace Antique Collection release tiny quantities annually
- Age statements - Older bourbons (15Y, 20Y, 23Y) are increasingly rare
- Wheated bourbons - Weller, Pappy, and Old Fitzgerald are particularly sought after
- Single barrel selections - Unique barrels selected by retailers or clubs
- Discontinued expressions - Some bourbons are discontinued, increasing secondary market value
- Global demand - Rapidly growing international interest in American whiskey
When comparing whisky vs whiskey, bourbon represents America's unique contribution to the spirit world. Unlike single malt scotch whisky or japanese whisky, bourbon's use of new charred oak barrels creates intense vanilla, caramel, and oak flavors not found elsewhere. From low cost whisky entry points (Evan Williams, Jim Beam White) to ultra-premium expensive whiskey investment bottles (Pappy 23, BTAC, Eagle Rare 25), bourbon offers exceptional value and enjoyment at every price point.
